After having a routine mammogram, or if a lump is detected in the breast, you may have referred for a breast ultrasound. The need for a breast ultrasound can sometimes bring with it a sense of anxiety or uncertainty. At GXU Radiology Specialists, we appreciate that this can be a vulnerable time for patients. That is why we are dedicated to providing timely and accurate breast imaging performed by experienced and highly-qualified sonographers who prioritise respectful, compassionate care.
What’s Involved?
Breast ultrasounds are an important diagnostic tool that aids in identifying and monitoring conditions affecting breast health. Your doctor may refer you to have a breast ultrasound for a range of reasons, including to:
- Investigate potential lumps identified on physical examination or on a mammogram
- Characterise the nature of identified lumps as either suspicious or benign
- Evaluate breast pain, nipple discharge, or inflammation
- Identify a target area for potential biopsy

The ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive examination that uses sound waves to create images of the breast tissue. For this examination, you may be asked to change into a gown. A sonographer will use a handheld probe and some gel to assess the breast tissue and capture images.
If required, we also provide timely interventional follow-up for continuity of care, including Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) and Core Biopsy.
Bulk Billed Breast Ultrasounds
We offer bulk-billed breast ultrasounds for patients with a valid pension or concession entitlement. With this, along with a Medicare card and referral from a GP or specialist, we can provide these essential imaging services at no out-of-pocket cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is a breast ultrasound different from a mammogram?
While breast ultrasound and mammogram are both diagnostic tools to assess the breasts, they are quite different in how they work.
Breast ultrasound is performed by a sonographer who uses a handheld probe that is moved over the skin which sends sound waves to capture images. In comparison, a mammogram involves the assistance of a radiographer as the breast is compressed between two plates and x-ray is used to capture images.
Breast ultrasound is ideal for characterising lumps, whereas mammograms are the primary tool used for screening and detecting calcifications.
Can I just get a breast ultrasound instead of a mammogram?
This will largely depend on your personal circumstances and clinical history. As a mammogram and breast ultrasound assess for different things, you may require one or both examinations. Your doctor will be able to advise you on what sort of breast imaging you will need.
Why should I have a breast ultrasound?
A breast ultrasound is a key diagnostic tool to support breast health. Your doctor may refer you to have a breast ultrasound for a number of reasons, including to:
- Investigate potential lumps identified on physical examination or on a mammogram.
- Characterise the nature of identified lumps as either suspicious or benign.
- Evaluate breast pain, nipple discharge, or inflammation.
- Identify a target area for potential biopsy.
How long does a breast ultrasound take?
A breast ultrasound generally takes up to 30 minutes. However, if you have breast implants, extra time may be needed. When making your appointment, please let our reception team know if you have implants, so that we may allow adequate time to perform the ultrasound.
Who does the breast ultrasound?
The breast ultrasound is performed by one of our experienced and highly-trained sonographers. Once the ultrasound is completed, the images are reviewed and reported on by a radiologist. The report is then sent to your referring doctor with the results.
