How it Works

Pelvic ultrasounds can be performed in two ways; a transabdominal (TA) ultrasound, and/or a transvaginal (TV) ultrasound.

For some patients, an external ultrasound of the pelvis through the abdomen may be more appropriate to perform. In preparation for a TA ultrasound of the pelvis, a full bladder is helpful to visualise the pelvic organs more clearly.

At the start of the ultrasound, the sonographer will apply gel to the lower abdomen and use a handheld probe over the area. Ultrasound uses sound waves to visualise the pelvic organs and images are captured by the sonographer.

If a TV ultrasound of the pelvis is being performed, the sonographer will ask the patient to empty their bladder. With the patient’s consent, a slender probe with gel is gently inserted into the vagina. With the probe being closer to the pelvic organs, clearer images can be obtained. This component of the ultrasound takes only a few minutes, and may be slightly uncomfortable but not painful.

Once completed, the images are reviewed by a radiologist who reports on the findings, and a report is sent back to the referring doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, a pelvic ultrasound shouldn’t be painful. There may be some slight discomfort when the transabdominal ultrasound is being performed with a full bladder, and during the transvaginal ultrasound, however this should only be for a few minutes. If you have any questions or concerns, our sonographers welcome the opportunity to discuss them with you and will provide clear communication at every stage of the ultrasound.

Yes, a referral is required from a GP or specialist for a pelvic ultrasound. Make an appointment to see your doctor to discuss any concerns you may have about your pelvic health, and if appropriate, they can provide you with a referral for a pelvic ultrasound.

An abdominal ultrasound is an external ultrasound of the upper abdominal organs, such as the liver. A transabdominal (TA) ultrasound of the pelvis is an ultrasound of the pelvic organs performed externally over the lower abdomen. A transvaginal (TV) ultrasound is an internal examination of the pelvic organs.

Often, these terms are interchangeable, however a scan is a broader term that may refer to a different kind of examination. When making your appointment, refer to your imaging request form from your doctor for the specific examination that you need, so we can make the correct appointment for you.

A pelvic ultrasound and CT scan of the pelvis are two different examinations, which often assess for different things. Depending on your medical history and current symptoms, your doctor may refer you to have either an ultrasound or CT scan.
